Sprouse It Up in Vintage Hits

It's time to jump back from all the hot new designers we have been taking a look at recently and to focus on the veritable rock star of the 80's and 90's New York fashion scene and VagaBond favorite, Stephen Sprouse. 

Having amassed influence from the likes of Warhol, Halston and Bill Blass through a midst of internships and alliances, Sprouse was a designer who thoroughly embraced fashion as art and worked to imperatively combine the two. 

Known for his business misadventures as much as for his graffiti prints, Day-Glo fabrics and outré runway shows (models chewing on vials filled with fake blood, anyone?)

Throughout his career, Sprouse merged between overwhelming success and disappointing career lows as time and again his businesses failed.

Sprouse was the genius behind the Louis Vuitton graffiti bags, a result of an invite to Paris by Marc Jacobs to assist with the collection. Needless to say, the bags were a monumental hit with the designer admitting that even he could not get his hands on one. 

Debbie Harry, the veritable Edie Sedgwick to Sprouse's Warhol, lived for a number of years with the designer, with him styling her for Blondie's 'Heart of Glass' video. The chanteuse fully embodied the Bowery girl look and with Sprouse's engagement, quickly became a style icon for a generation who's looked is echoed in that of Ms. Moss today. 

Stephen Sprouse was a designer, an artist and an innovator. Despite his roller coaster of a career, his work is of the utmost importance in fashion history. He broke the bounds of fashion and challenged it, assuring his name will forever be in association with the legends of times past.

The Perfect Summer Dress Gets All Sproused Up

With so much recent attention being paid to the iconic pop-inspired designs of legendary American designer STEPHEN SPROUSE, we couldn't think of a sweeter dress that highlights his career better than this highly collectible & rare silk tube dress that is printed with an ode to another pop master, the great Andy Warhol. It happens to be a seductively fitted matte silk satin tube dress that has a detachable printed silk chiffon train done up in explosive pop colors. This train can be attached to either the front or the back of the dress with signature Sprouse velcro straps that lie on each side of the bust. It was produced in 1997 for Sprouse's fifth & final comeback show with exclusive permission from the Warhol Foundation and boast's Warhol's infamous "Admit One" ticket print. What's even more remarkable is the fact that this piece proves how far ahead of his time Sprouse was when you think of how Warhol prints have been used for everything in fashion by now from the disparate likes of everyone from Levi's to Barbie 10 years after the production of this dress. It also happens to have a hidden side zip and hidden boning on the each side of the bust.

Louis Vuitton Celebrates Stephen Sprouse

Even five years after his death, fashion's admiration of the original "downtown darling," Stephen Sprouse, and his cutting-edge aesthetic, never seems to fade. This week Louis Vuitton will launch a line of bags and accessories inspired by their highly-collectible 2000 collaboration with him and a new book celebrating the iconic designer has just come out.

We wanted to take a moment to highlight some of our own Sprouse scores, not only because they showcase his knack for using bold saturated pop colors with a punkish flare, but also because they are still incredibly relevant for today! V are happy to announce that we have just acquired these two fabulous pieces from highly coveted 80's graffiti artist turned mega-designer STEPHEN SPROUSE. The first is a classic melon colored a-line empire waist dress, and the second is a three piece hand knit rainbow striped suit consisting of a wide cropped sweater, tap pants and long leg-warmers.

They are great testaments to his vision and are both poppy, up-beat offerings, and those tap shorts...very Lolita.
