Best of Paris Spring 2011

As always, fashion season's don't get as exciting and inventive anywhere else as they do in Paris. Here's a look at our Spring/Summer 2011 favorites from the city of light, ones that are destined to inspire our future buys.

Celine(and above)

What can we say, we like many of you, can't get enough of what Phoebe Philo is doing at Celine and Spring's effort was once again, right on the money. Her focus on the confident woman is still there, but it was the collections take on the yetti coat's free-spirited rawness that felt fresh this time around. And while her covetable leather separates and crisp takes on the white button down made an appearance, we're especially keen on her new fluid pant.

Yves Saint Laurent

Stefano Pilati's Spring 2011 YSL collection was a calculated play on rejuvenating the house's codes with a seductive finesse that felt aggressively Parisian and sexually charged in it's severity. Here, charm came via the details: contrast flamenco ruffles, open backs, graphic cut-out waists and dropped shoulders.

Balenciaga

The sci-fi teddy boys that Nicolas Ghesquiere sent out for Spring 2011 had all the provocative and beautifully executed Balenciaga-isms one could hope for. This made for a less daring sense of the avant-garde, where the overall looks can be taken apart for an exciting range of rethought classics, from fitted tux jackets to crisp white button downs, fashion this realistic rarely looks this bold on a runway.

Rochas

Every season needs some vintage flair and Rochas romantic look at 70's Parisian maman chic felt fresh with it's powdery, muted colorway and relaxed fluidity. The pajama separates and fuss-free and unadorned bias cut goddess dresses with a 40's vibe that closed the show were a powerful display of Marco Zanini's vision of soft, subtle luxury.

Carven

Carven seems to have come back out of nowhere with a couple of smart, well-priced collections that present an insouciant Parisian girlishness that's at once arresting and realistic. Rethought relaxed separates came with just the right amount of Lolita loucheness and crisp preppiness, making Carven and it's $400 price points all the more desirable. Spring 2011 had the easy urbane wearability of a 3.1 Phillip Lim collection mixed with the attitude of Charles Anastase's coquettish girl.

Fashion Television: YSL Haute Couture F/W 1995

Though these videos are from the later part of Yves Saint Laurent's grande career, we were more than happy to come across these. Why you ask? Well, for years & years we have been saying, so much time goes into the production of a show and furthermore, as we all know, fashion has a way of encapsulating the times. Call it nostalgia if you must, but we think its about time fashion houses start releasing dvds of not only highlights but of each and every show. Think about it, after his untimely death, how thrilling would it be to be able to look back at all the glory of Alexander McQueen on the runway without having to scramble through fuzzy videos on Youtube?

Inspiration: YSL's Fall 2010 Ads

We are always mad for the moody brilliance of Stefano Pilati at YSL and love his fall 2010 collection for the storied house. Of course we think this ad featuring Daria, shot by Inez & Vinoodh, is a brilliantly seductive follow-up to one hell of a smart collection. Truth be told, we find it bad-ass in the most respectable kind of way.

Inspiration: Yves Saint Laurent Resort 2010

Stefano Pilati's Resort 2010 collection for Yves Saint Laurent was so right-on in our books, at the very least we'd like to think of his propositions as great inspiration for easy going yet refined dressing with an oh-so Parisian flair.

We love his update on the iconic 70's era YSL white suit with its ultra-chic arm slits.

And this number with its sculptural shape & unfussy French frill is perfection, pure & simple.

Medal-Worthy Military Pieces at Vnyc

Military influences cycle thru the fashion system practically every other season and are often the victim of uninspired designs at the hands of fast-fashion chains. Avoid taking the literal approach & look for pieces subtly inflected with military references.

Looking Forward: Best of Pre-Fall 2010

Pre-fall collections are often an indicator of what we'll be seeing at the upcoming a/w presentations & for Vnyc, each pre-fall presentation is, to some degree or other, a collection of re-tweaked references which provide focus and inspirational direction for our future buys. There is a heavy early 70's theme to many of the pre-fall shows this time around, the strongest being Chloe, Prada & YSL. The oughties obsession with exaggerated 80's proportions seems to have fallen out of favor, replaced by a softer, slightly nostalgic sort of luxe.

Celine-(also shown above)
After a decade of over-wrought maximalism and heavy-handed "urban warrior" propositions, Phoebe Philo's clean, cool and confident outings at the once quiet Parisian house Celine are filled with the kind of pragmatic sportswear and luxe-low key essentials that have won her a bevy of fans worldwide. Mariner sweaters, laser-cut leather outerwear, smart uses of fur, who would have ever thought that classic minimalism of this ilk could once again look so fresh? Long story short, Philo is a woman designing very smart, alluring pieces for women, and we want everything.

Vera Wang-
Taking a smart departure from her arty inclinations, Vera Wang's recent outing was a take on urban-minded gear somewhat borrowed from the boys in moody gray's and standard blacks. From boy blazers to military inspired parkas and plenty of pretty 20's inspired sequined cob-webby evening looks(giving Rodarte a run for the money?), Wang's range was expansive and right-on. One of us has been on the look-out for inventive uses of fur, and Wang's gray fuss-free parka with it's Mongolian fur patched pockets may just be exactly what we were looking for.

Missoni-
After a few hit-or-miss seasons of tweaking her family's legendary heritage, Angela Missoni was back full force with one of the smartest winter oriented collections we have seen in a long while. The house's signature zig-zag prints were used in a variety of head-to-toe looks that looked more calm and collected than the disheveled powder faced Victorian doll of season's past. Each look was layered with multi-tasking softly structured graphic sweater coats, blanket skirts, tweed suiting and scores of layering essentials that came in a soothing color palette of warm corals balanced by various grays.

Yves Saint Laurent-
A glamorous take on 70's France and classic house signatures at YSL.

Chloe-
Trim English inspired suiting with a relaxed slightly 70's loucheness, Hannah MacGibbon keeps getting it right at Chloe.

Prada-
Nerdy 70's era campus inspired cuties at Prada where the looks where anything but whimsical.

Sonia Rykiel-
Some of the smartest, coolest winter layering options around, we really dig the vast variety of 70's inspired knit options.
